'I tumori in Italia', is a joint project of the National Institute of Cancer (INT) and the Health Institute (ISS). It was initially funded by the Italian Health Ministry, and has now the support of "Alleanza contro il Cancro". It aims to start collaborations with organisations of oncological research (e.g. IRCCS), with the Italian Association of Cancer Registries (AIRT), institutes, patients' organisations and scientific and medical associations involved in the fight against cancer. 'I tumori in Italia' aims to describe the distribution of cancer diseases on national level in order to identify health surveillance delay and help prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and pathology control.
The project was intended to connect to the European information system through the network established by the project EUROCHIP (European Cancer Health Indicator Project). This study, realised within a programme of the European Commission and co-ordinated by INT in Milan, proposes a list of health indicators useful for the study and control of cancer. Goal of EUROCHIP in Europe and 'I tumori in Italia' in Italy, is to describe the issue of cancer and help the implementation of actions that would be useful to reduce inequalities in controlling the disease in the countries of the European Union. The creation of a continental health data bank is also ongoing.
Within the above scenario, the web site 'I tumori in Italia' was intended to make the information on epidemiological cancer indicators (i.e. incidence, mortality, survival, prevalence) available nationally and regionally. Each user can obtain the required information by addressing questions to a vast data bank. Progressively, data on national and international comparison, on risk factors related to oncological diseases, on indicators useful for regional pathological surveillance, on preventive policies, on screening activity, on sociological and macro-economy variables in relation with cancers are also going to be available.
The site is intended as a centre of information deriving from scientific publications, and will be constantly updated.
